The studio behind the long-running Destiny franchise is reportedly preparing for another round of significant job cuts. According to sources familiar with the matter, Bungie is planning to reduce its workforce substantially, with the move coming as the company shifts its focus away from the Destiny series.
The layoffs are said to be tied to a broader strategic pivot. Despite years of speculation and fan demand, a full sequel to Destiny 2 has not been given the green light. Instead, Bungie is reportedly doubling down on its upcoming extraction shooter, Marathon. The company has already confirmed that it will end major content updates for Destiny 2, signaling a quiet wind-down for the game that has been its flagship for over a decade.
This news follows a turbulent period for the developer. In 2023, Bungie laid off around 100 employees, and it has struggled to meet revenue targets since splitting from publisher Activision in 2019. The latest cuts are expected to affect multiple departments, though exact numbers have not been confirmed.
For the Destiny community, the lack of a third numbered entry has been a point of frustration. Many players hoped the franchise would receive a proper sequel with a new engine and fresh story direction. Instead, Bungie appears to be betting its future on Marathon, a title that has yet to launch and faces a crowded market of live-service shooters.
The company has not issued an official statement regarding the reported layoffs.
