Editors and freelance writers at the gaming outlet TheGamer are reportedly facing a major shift in how they get paid. According to internal communications, the Valnet-owned website is moving to a controversial compensation model where contributors will only receive payment if their articles generate a minimum number of views. If a piece fails to hit that traffic threshold, the writer gets nothing for their work.
The policy has sparked immediate anger and concern among the site's staff. Many argue that it places an unfair burden on writers, who have no control over search engine algorithms, homepage placement, or social media promotion. Critics also point out that this model discourages in-depth features, reviews of niche games, and thoughtful analysis in favor of low-effort listicles and clickbait headlines designed to maximize page views.
Industry observers note that this is not the first time a Valnet property has experimented with such a system. The company, which also owns sites like Screen Rant and CBR, has long faced criticism for its aggressive approach to content volume and traffic metrics. However, this latest move pushes the risk entirely onto the writers, turning what was once a stable freelance gig into a gamble.
For now, it remains unclear how many writers will accept the new terms or if the site will face a mass exodus of talent. TheGamer has not issued a public statement addressing the backlash.
