The 2017 release of Cuphead changed the game, quite literally. A hand-drawn ode to the rubber hose animation of the 1920s and 1930s, Cuphead showed just how ambitious a video game could get with its retro aesthetic. Now, a new project is taking that same spirit of cartoon chaos in a completely different direction.
The creators of the upcoming game "Oh, My Doug!" have revealed their inspirations in an exclusive interview. They describe the game as a frantic blend of the gross-out humor of "Ren & Stimpy" and the inside-the-body adventure of "Osmosis Jones." The result is a wild, hand-animated platformer that feels like a lost Cartoon Network show from the 1990s.
Players control Doug, a man whose body has become a battleground. A bizarre infection has turned his internal organs into a surreal, living world. Doug must navigate through his own bloodstream, lungs, and digestive tract, fighting off mutated cells and bizarre germs. The animation style is intentionally rough and squishy, with characters that stretch, bulge, and ooze in ways that would make John Kricfalusi proud.
The developers say they wanted to capture the feeling of a Saturday morning cartoon that was a little too weird for Saturday morning. The gameplay involves a lot of running, jumping, and using Doug's own bodily functions as weapons. It is a messy, loud, and visually distinct experience that aims to stand out in a crowded indie market. "Oh, My Doug!" is currently in development for a release later this year.
