More than half of the 50 best-selling video game franchises are already locked up by major publishers. For Hollywood studios hungry for the next big interactive IP to adapt into movies or TV shows, the well is drying up faster than most realize. The problem isn't just scarcity. It is a fundamental shift in how people play games and what they expect from them.
The remaining unclaimed properties often belong to niche genres or older titles with limited modern appeal. Meanwhile, player habits have changed. Gamers now spend years inside live-service titles like Fortnite or Genshin Impact, games that constantly update and resist neat narrative adaptation. A single-player story with a clear beginning, middle, and end is no longer the default experience.
Hollywood still thinks in terms of buying a name and slapping it on a poster. But the most valuable IP today is not a dormant brand from 2005. It is a constantly evolving ecosystem that cannot be easily translated into a two-hour film. The era of easy video game adaptations is ending before it truly began. The next wave will require deeper understanding of games as ongoing services, not just back catalogs to mine.
