The Need For Speed Franchise May Be On Life Support

The Need For Speed Franchise May Be On Life Support

The future of the Need For Speed video game series looks increasingly uncertain, as the development studio responsible for its most recent entry has shifted its full attention to another project. According to a new report, the team at Criterion Games is now "solely focused on Battlefield," leaving the long-running racing franchise without a clear path forward.

This news comes as a significant blow to fans who have watched the series struggle to find its footing over the last decade. While Need For Speed has seen multiple reboots and changes in direction, the latest installment, released in 2022, failed to generate the sales or critical buzz needed to justify a quick sequel. The decision to pull Criterion away from racing duties suggests that Electronic Arts, the publisher behind the brand, may be prioritizing its first-person shooter franchise over its arcade racer.

Criterion has a storied history with racing games, having previously developed the beloved Burnout series before taking over Need For Speed. However, the studio was absorbed into EA's larger Battlefield development structure last year. With no other internal team currently known to be working on a new Need For Speed title, the franchise is effectively in a holding pattern. For now, the series that once defined arcade racing for a generation appears to be stalled on the side of the road, waiting for a tow truck that may never arrive.
