Summer Game Fest 2026 brought plenty of scares this year, with several major horror franchises making a strong comeback. We went hands-on with some of the most anticipated titles, and the lineup is genuinely terrifying.
Capcom finally revealed a full remake of Resident Evil: Code Veronica, now simply called Resident Evil Veronica. The demo we played leaned heavily into the gothic atmosphere of Rockfort Island, with updated over-the-shoulder gameplay and a much darker, more oppressive lighting system. The Tyrant encounters felt more aggressive, and the audio design was genuinely unsettling. It looks like Capcom is treating this entry with the same care as the RE2 and RE4 remakes.
Another standout was the new Hellraiser game, simply titled Hellraiser. This is not a movie tie-in but an original story set in the Cenobite universe. The demo put us in a labyrinthine puzzle box dimension where light and shadow are your only tools. The Cenobite designs are grotesque and faithful to the source material, and the game relies on psychological dread rather than jump scares. It is a slow burn, but a very effective one.
Fans of the classic torture-porn era will be happy to hear about the Saw game revival. The new title, Saw: The Game of Jigsaw, is a first-person survival horror that focuses on escape rooms and moral choices. In the demo, we had to choose between saving a partner or sacrificing them to progress. The traps are brutal and creative, and the game does not shy away from the series' signature gore. It feels like a proper return to form for the franchise.
Other notable mentions include a new indie title called "The Hollow," which uses a unique camera mechanic where you can only see the monster when you are not looking directly at it. It is a clever twist on the classic "don't blink" horror trope.
Summer Game Fest 2026 proved that horror is in a healthy place. Whether you prefer survival horror, psychological terror, or pure gore, there is something coming that will keep you up at night.
