The original Heave Ho was a chaotic masterpiece of cooperative failure. Its sequel takes everything that made players scream with laughter and frustration, and cranks the absurdity up a notch. Heave Ho 2 is not a game about winning. It is a game about watching your so-called best friend drag you off a cliff because they panicked at the wrong moment.
The core loop is simple. You are a wobbly little character with a stretchy arm. You grab onto ledges, other players, or anything that is not nailed down, and you pull. The goal is to reach the finish line together. The problem is that physics hates you. Momentum swings wildly, arms flail, and one wrong grab sends the whole chain tumbling into a pit of spikes. The game does not punish failure with a game over screen. It just respawns you and lets the cycle of betrayal continue.
What makes this sequel shine is the new level design. There are moving platforms that rotate based on weight distribution, slippery ice sections, and a few puzzles that require actual timing and trust. Trust is the key word. You will need to trust that your partner will hold still while you swing across a gap. They will not. They will let go at the worst possible second, and you will both plummet into the void. Then you will laugh, because that is the only sane response.
The visuals are bright and goofy, with exaggerated character animations that make every stumble look hilarious. The sound design is also worth noting. The little grunts and squeaks your character makes when they are about to fall add a layer of comedy that text cannot capture.
Heave Ho 2 is best played with three or four people, preferably in the same room. Online play works, but half the fun is hearing your friends scream in real time. It is not a deep game. It does not need to be. It is a game about letting go of your pride and grabbing onto someone else's hand, even when you know they are going to let you down. And honestly, that is exactly what you want from a party game. Just do not blame us when your friendships get a little strained.
