Roblox wants kids to vibe-code their own video games

Roblox is experimenting with a new feature called Build, an AI-powered tool designed to let users create playable video games simply by typing a description. The feature is currently being tested inside the company's mobile app, and it represents a significant shift in how younger audiences might approach game development.

Instead of learning complex scripting languages or navigating intricate menus, a user can write something like "a race track in space" or "a haunted house with hidden treasure," and the AI will generate a basic, playable version of that idea. Roblox calls this approach "vibe-coding," a term that suggests the process is less about technical precision and more about capturing a general feel or concept.

The company sees this as a way to lower the barrier to entry for its massive user base, many of whom are children and teenagers. By removing the need for coding knowledge, Roblox hopes to encourage more players to become creators. The AI handles the heavy lifting of generating terrain, placing objects, and setting up basic rules, while the user can then tweak the result or add more details through additional prompts.

Critics have raised concerns about the quality and originality of AI-generated content, as well as the potential for the tool to flood the platform with derivative or low-effort games. Roblox has not announced a wide release date for Build, but the test signals a growing trend in the gaming industry where AI is used to automate parts of the creative process. For now, the tool remains an experiment, but it could reshape how millions of young players think about making their own virtual worlds.
