The designer who shaped the early days of online multiplayer worlds is building what he calls his dream project. Raph Koster, known for creating Ultima Online and Star Wars Galaxies, is working on Stars Reach, a game that aims to challenge the established giants of the MMO genre.
Stars Reach puts players in control of entire planets. You can govern a world, exploit its resources, protect its ecosystems, and transform its surface. The game is built around the idea that players should have real power over their environment, not just walk through scripted content. Koster wants to bring back the sandbox philosophy that made his earlier games legendary.
In Stars Reach, every planet is a living system. Resources are finite, ecosystems can collapse, and player decisions have lasting consequences. If you strip a planet of its forests, that world stays barren until someone actively works to restore it. If you build a city in a dangerous zone, you will have to defend it.
Koster has spent years thinking about what makes virtual worlds feel alive. He believes modern MMOs have become too focused on theme park rides and loot treadmills. Stars Reach is his attempt to return to the roots of the genre, where players create their own stories through conflict, cooperation, and exploration.
The game is still in development, but Koster's track record gives it weight. Ultima Online defined the social MMO. Star Wars Galaxies gave players unprecedented freedom. If anyone can challenge World of Warcraft's long shadow, it might be the person who helped build the foundation of the genre in the first place.
