Developers working on Magic: The Gathering – Arena at Wizards of the Coast in Renton, Washington, have officially unionized with the Communications Workers of America (CWA). The newly formed bargaining unit, which includes quality assurance testers, artists, and software engineers, aims to address critical workplace issues such as remote work policies, layoff protections, artificial intelligence usage, and overtime compensation.
The decision to unionize comes after months of organizing among the game’s development team, who cited concerns over job security and unpredictable scheduling. In a statement, the group emphasized that the union would provide a collective voice to negotiate fair terms, especially as the gaming industry faces widespread layoffs and increasing reliance on AI tools that could threaten creative roles. “We want to ensure that the people who build and maintain Magic: The Gathering – Arena have a say in how their labor is valued,” one organizer said.
The CWA, which has supported similar efforts in the tech and gaming sectors, noted that this marks a significant step for workers at a major tabletop and digital gaming company. The union will seek formal recognition from Wizards of the Coast, a subsidiary of Hasbro, and begin contract negotiations covering wages, benefits, and protections against abrupt changes to work-from-home arrangements. The move reflects a broader trend of game developers organizing to combat industry instability and demand greater transparency from employers.
