Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser has entered the ongoing conversation about physical versus digital games on PlayStation, offering a perspective that cuts against the industry's push toward all-digital distribution. In a recent interview, Houser argued that players should retain the option to buy physical discs, even as Sony and other publishers increasingly prioritize digital sales.

Houser acknowledged the convenience of digital downloads but warned that removing physical media entirely could hurt game preservation and consumer ownership. "When you buy a disc, you own something tangible," he said. "You can lend it, sell it, or keep it on a shelf. Digital licenses can change or vanish." He pointed out that older games often become unavailable when storefronts shut down, making physical copies a reliable backup for collectors and historians.

The discussion comes as Sony's PlayStation 5 Pro launches without a disc drive by default, and many new releases ship with download codes instead of discs. Houser suggested that while digital is fine for some players, forcing everyone into that model would be a mistake. "Choice is the key," he said. "Not everyone has fast internet. Not everyone wants to rent their library."

He also touched on the cultural side of physical games, noting that box art, manuals, and the ritual of swapping discs are part of gaming's identity. "It's not just nostalgia," Houser said. "It's about having a relationship with the product that isn't mediated by a server."

The debate is unlikely to settle soon, but Houser's comments add weight to the argument that physical media should not disappear entirely. For now, players can still find new disc-based games at retail, though the window may be closing.
