Johnny Galvatron and Woody Woodward Open Up About Music and the Making of 'Mixtape'

In a recent conversation, Johnny Galvatron and Woody Woodward, the creative duo behind the indie studio Beethoven & Dinosaur, sat down to discuss their latest project, the critically acclaimed game "Mixtape." The title has been turning heads since its release, blending a nostalgic soundtrack with a deeply personal narrative.

Galvatron, who serves as the game's composer and co-writer, explained that music is not just a backdrop in "Mixtape" but the driving force of the story. "We wanted the player to feel like they were flipping through a cassette collection, each song unlocking a memory or a moment," he said. Woodward, the lead designer, added that the game's structure was built around this idea. "Every level is tied to a specific track. The gameplay shifts to match the mood of the music. It's like a playable album."

The pair also touched on the challenges of indie development. Woodward noted that balancing the technical demands of a game with the emotional weight of the soundtrack required constant iteration. "We scrapped entire sequences because the music and the action didn't sync up. It had to feel seamless," he said.

When asked about the future, both were tight-lipped but hinted at more projects that explore the intersection of sound and interactivity. "We're not done with this approach," Galvatron said. "Music tells stories in a way that words and pictures can't. We want to keep pushing that."
