A new study from a leading children's hospital has uncovered a significant connection between negative parenting behaviors and the development of gaming disorder in young children diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The research sheds light on how family dynamics may influence problematic gaming habits in this vulnerable population.
The findings are scheduled to be presented at the Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) 2026 Meeting, which will take place from April 24 through April 27 in Boston. Researchers examined the relationship between various parenting factors and the emergence of gaming disorder symptoms in children with ADHD, a condition already associated with higher risks of impulsive behavior and difficulty with self-regulation.
Preliminary results indicate that specific negative parenting approaches—such as harsh discipline, inconsistent rule enforcement, and low emotional warmth—correlate strongly with increased gaming disorder symptoms in these children. The study suggests that children with ADHD may be particularly susceptible to using video games as an escape from stressful home environments or as a coping mechanism for unmet emotional needs.
Experts note that while gaming itself is not inherently harmful, the combination of ADHD-related impulsivity and negative parenting can create a perfect storm for addictive gaming behaviors. The research underscores the importance of positive parenting strategies, including consistent boundaries, emotional support, and structured routines, as protective factors against gaming disorder.
The study adds to a growing body of evidence that family-based interventions may be crucial in preventing and treating gaming disorder in children with neurodevelopmental conditions.
