Rockstar Games has confirmed a network intrusion after a hacker group threatened to leak source code and other assets unless a ransom was paid. The company, currently deep in development on the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI, stated that an unauthorized third party had gained access to "a limited amount of non-material company information."
The breach follows a high-profile incident earlier this week where the same hacking collective posted dozens of early development videos of GTA 6 gameplay online. The group then escalated its threats, demanding payment to prevent the full release of what it claims are the game's source code and other critical files.
In its statement, Rockstar assured fans that the breach would not cause any long-term disruption to its live services or impact ongoing development projects. The developer emphasized that it expects no delay to its current publishing schedule. The company has not commented on whether it intends to negotiate with or pay the hackers, nor has it detailed the exact nature of the information accessed beyond describing it as non-material.
Security experts warn that such breaches, even of data deemed non-critical by the company, can expose proprietary development tools and internal communications, posing significant risks. Rockstar stated it is taking steps to bolster its security systems in the wake of the attack. Law enforcement agencies are reportedly involved in the ongoing investigation.
