Permanent ban on violent video games pressed after Tacloban shooting

Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla has called for a permanent ban on violent video games in the wake of the recent school shooting in Tacloban City. Speaking to reporters on Monday, Remulla argued that certain games glorifying violence have a direct influence on real-world aggression, especially among young players. He stressed that the ban should be absolute, not just a temporary measure, to prevent further tragedies.

The push comes after a lone gunman opened fire at a school in Tacloban, leaving several students injured and sparking nationwide alarm. Authorities are still investigating the suspect's background, but early reports suggest he was an avid player of first-person shooter games. Remulla did not name specific titles but said the government would work with game developers and distributors to enforce the prohibition.

Critics, however, question whether a ban alone can address deeper issues like mental health and access to firearms. Some argue that violent media has existed for decades without causing such incidents, pointing to other countries where similar bans have had mixed results. Remulla acknowledged these concerns but insisted that the government must act decisively. "We cannot wait for another tragedy to happen," he said. The Department of the Interior and Local Government is now drafting a proposal for Congress, though no timeline for its passage has been set.
