Origin Lab, a startup focused on creating a licensed data marketplace connecting video game companies with artificial intelligence developers, has secured $8 million in funding. The company aims to bridge a growing gap between the gaming industry and AI labs that need high-quality training data for world models.
World models are AI systems that learn to simulate environments and predict outcomes, similar to how humans understand physical spaces and cause-and-effect relationships. These models require vast amounts of structured, interactive data. Video game assets, including 3D environments, physics engines, and character animations, offer a rich source of such data. However, most game companies have been hesitant to share their intellectual property without clear legal and financial frameworks.
Origin Lab plans to solve this by acting as a middleman. It will help game developers license their assets, such as level designs, object interactions, and movement data, to AI researchers. The goal is to create a transparent marketplace where game studios earn revenue while AI labs get clean, legally cleared training material. This approach could accelerate the development of more capable world models without relying on scraped or unlicensed data.
The funding round was led by several investors focused on AI infrastructure and gaming technology. Origin Lab says the money will be used to build its platform, onboard game studios, and develop tools that convert game engine outputs into formats suitable for machine learning. The company believes this could become a significant new revenue stream for the gaming industry while solving a critical bottleneck in AI research.
