Digital artist Darek Zabrocki has shared a behind-the-scenes look at his workflow for creating video game key art, blending 3D modeling in Blender with 2D finishing in Photoshop. The result is a striking, cinematic scene that feels both painterly and grounded.
Zabrocki starts by building a rough 3D scene in Blender, using simple geometry to establish composition, lighting, and depth. He does not aim for a final render at this stage. Instead, he uses the 3D space as a scaffolding for perspective and atmosphere. "The 3D base gives me a solid foundation to paint over," he explains. He then exports a series of render passes, including ambient occlusion, depth maps, and basic color blocks.
The real magic happens in Photoshop. Zabrocki layers these passes, painting over them with custom brushes to add texture, detail, and mood. He uses the depth map to create atmospheric haze and blur, pushing the background elements back while keeping the foreground crisp. The 3D lighting serves as a guide, but he often overrides it with hand-painted highlights and shadows to achieve a more expressive, illustrative feel.
The artist emphasizes that the 3D stage is not about perfection. It is about speed and control. By blocking out the scene in Blender, he avoids spending hours redrawing perspective or fixing anatomy. The painting phase then becomes a free, intuitive process. "I can focus on the story and the emotion," he says, "because the technical heavy lifting is already done."
Zabrocki's method highlights a growing trend in game art: using 3D tools as a sketchpad rather than a final output. The hybrid approach allows artists to combine the precision of digital modeling with the warmth of traditional painting, creating key art that stands out in a crowded market. For aspiring artists, the takeaway is clear: learn both disciplines, but never let the tools dictate the vision.
