Nintendo has confirmed that Donkey Kong 64 will be added to the Nintendo Switch Online library of classic N64 games next month. The announcement came during the latest Nintendo Direct presentation, where the company revealed that the 1999 platformer will become the 43rd title available in the service's N64 collection.
Originally developed by Rare, Donkey Kong 64 was a major release for the Nintendo 64, marking the first time the iconic ape starred in a fully 3D adventure. The game features five playable Kong characters, each with unique abilities, and a massive hub world filled with collectibles, minigames, and hidden areas. Players must switch between Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Lanky Kong, Tiny Kong, and Chunky Kong to solve puzzles and defeat the villainous King K. Rool.
The Switch Online version is expected to include the same content as the original cartridge, though it remains unclear if the infamous "DK Rap" will be fully intact. The game's notoriously high completion requirements, including the need to collect hundreds of Golden Bananas and other items, have made it a point of both nostalgia and frustration for fans.
Donkey Kong 64 joins a growing list of N64 classics on the service, including Super Mario 64, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and Banjo-Kazooie. The release is scheduled for sometime next month, with a specific date yet to be announced.
