2K is the only one that could take on EA Sports FC

That is the same city that houses the main studio for EA Sports, the makers of EA Sports FC and Madden. The move is a direct challenge to the industry leader, and the team is already talking about building the next major sports franchise.

The new studio is stacked with former EA Sports leadership. Key names include Aaron McHardy, who was the VP and executive producer on EA Sports FC and Madden, and Gary Paterson, the former head of design on FIFA and NBA Live. They are joined by other veterans who have worked on UFC, NHL, and Skate. The team's goal is to redefine the future of sports video games, and they have the experience to back up that ambition.

2K is already a major player in the space with its NBA 2K and WWE 2K franchises. Its main sports studio, Visual Concepts, has been around since 1998. However, this new venture feels different. The hiring of so many people who worked directly on the FIFA and EA Sports FC series strongly suggests that 2K is finally making a serious play for the football and soccer market. The studio's name comes from the belief that a small axe can take down a big tree, which is a clear message of intent.

When EA dropped the FIFA license in 2023, FIFA president Gianni Infantino was confident the organization would return with the best game available. Many, including myself, doubted that claim.
